Common and Copper Beech tree's

Walking up from the memorial steps and turning right you will see the magnificent Common Beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) and the Copper Beech tree (Fagus purpurea) standing side by side. The Common Beech tree is a majestic tree usually home to rare wildlife and is also known as the queen of British trees. Some suggest the branches hang like a cathedral. No wonder this beautiful tree is in the cathedral grounds. The Copper Beech tree is so distinctive with its rich purple leaves. This tree is a bit of a marmite tree so will love it and some will hate it but we think it is pretty spectacular.
